Meet Jim and Kayla

Hey all!
We are MeteoTechWx, or as we’re better known to most, Jim and Kayla Kalenian. We’re a father/daughter team of meteorologists based in central North Carolina who love all things weather, storm chasing, and coffee.  While our main interest is in severe weather, we enjoy anything that gets us out into the world doing what we love.

We are both degreed meteorologists. Jim graduated from SUNY Albany in 1992, and Kayla graduated from UNC Asheville in 2017.

The 5 Topics in Tier One: The Beginner's Guide to Meteorology

Topic One: Meteorology Basics
This video goes over and defines a lot of the terms that you'll hear in the rest of the course so that we're all on the same playing field going forward.

Topic Two: Air Masses, Boundaries and Fronts
In this video you'll see examples of the four types of fronts and how they move, other types of boundaries like troughs, ridges and squall lines, as well as all of the different air masses around the world.

Topic Three: Pressure Systems
Now that we've covered the basics, air masses, and all of the kinds of boundaries, we're ready to go into more detail about high and low pressure systems.

Topic Four: Cloud Types
After going over everything from the first three topics, it's time to ask the question "How do clouds tie into this?".

Topic Five: Energy Transfer
Finally, in this video we'll ask the questions "What is radiation?", "What is the Greenhouse Effect?", "What role does radiation play in our day-to-day weather?" and so much more.
